Jim Phillips
James Michael Phillips was born in Christchurch on September 24th, 1944 and died in his hometon on April 17th, 2018. Jim was a highly regarded saxophone specialist, playing Alto, Tenor and Baritone versions of the instrument with equal skill. As the wonderful decade of the 60's was beginning, Jim was playing saxophone around the church dances in Christchurch with a popular band called The Statesmen, who eventually morphed into Peter, Paul and The Pursuers. About this time, Johnny Campbell was forming a new band which he asked Jim to join. The band very quickly became popular and was later to become known as Johnny Campbell and The Detours, securing their first residency at Surf City and later the Laredo Nitespot. After Johnny Campbell and The Detours, Jimmy went on to play with several well known Christchurch groups, including The Esquires, Coalition, the Mainland Connection and the very popular Neketini Brass. Over a period of three decades he was essentially involved in the New Zealand jazz scene, realising his true ambition in music and playing with SoulPack at various jazz and corporate events. Jim however never lost his love for rock and roll and in 2005 joined the Peter Sowden/Brian Ringrose band About Time and played with them at their ROCKIN' IS OUR BUSINESS dance parties and other events until they finally disbanded. |
