David LaPlanche - performing at the 2007 ROCKONZ Aftermatch Function at Warner's Hotel, Christchurch 2007
David was born in Waimate on January 24th, 1944 and died peacefully on May 27th, 2024 in Queensland, Australia, having lived for many years in that country. His musical career began with the winning of a talent quest in his home town of Waimate, at the age of 11 - singing Buddy Holly's Oh Boy. He was soon playing in his own bands, and performing locally, with his first group being The Melody Makers featuring Alan Kernick (Lead Guitar), Beau Stichman (Drums), Johnny Jones (Saxophone), David LaPlanche (Guitar/Vocals) and Buffy Matherson (Piano). His next group was The Nights, which again played extensively around the local scene. Latterly he featured at nightclubs, dances, cabaret shows and Caroline Bay Christmas Carnivals. Australia beckoned and he did a variety of work including cabaret, RSL and Leagues Clubs, and made appearances on a number of TV Shows including Brian Henderson's Bandstand. David entertained American Troops on R and R from Vietnam before the UK beckoned, and in London he won a talent quest which included cabaret shows in Scotland, Germany, Italy and throughout the UK. |
