Out of Timaru, the Union Blues Soul Band was well known in Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill - probably more so than on their home turf.  John, Ken and Barry had been together since circa 1960 when they were school friends.  They saw many musicians "come and go" within the group, and as at 1970 had been playing as the Union Blues Soul Band — their greatest success being a third place in the South Island Battle of the Bands.  They considered their music to be "d" in its nature.  In September 1970 the group elected to make a move to Sydney, Australia to try their luck in that environoment.  Three "associates" joined them in their move - Murray Stewart (potentially organist for the group), along with Barry Reid and Stewart Milne.
