The Opposition on stage at The Plainsman circa 1964 .....
Ted Meares (Lead Guitar), Jim Whitfield (Drums), Peter Gillette (Rhythm Guitar/Keyboards) and founder Peter Hansen (Bass Guitar).
Under another group name, Peter Hansen had replaced George Drayton on bass, whilst Ted Meares had replaced Brian Dean on lead — the name The Opposition was Peter Gillette's brainchild. Peter would eventually move on to join Peter Nelson and The Castaways in Wellington, while Ted Meares took up musical tuition, working for Clarrie Light.
Other members over time included Dave Henderson, Larry McKay and Phil Battersby on guitar, Gary Mayo, Tom Corlett and Dave Diver served on drums, whilst pedal steel guitarist Jim Lange was also a member for about 10 years.
The Opposition was a group of versatility who presented a sound musical programme ranging from standards to R&B — at various times they held long-time residencies at The Plainsman and The Bush Inn Courts |
