Murray Woodward  —  saxophonist with The Venturers .....

Murray Woodward an original member of The Venturers playing saxophone, along with Graham Hirst (Lead Guitar), Peter Caulton (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar), George Drayton (Bass Guitar and later Keyboards) with Jim Whitfield (Drums).  When The Venturers got the gig at Surf City in approximately 1965, Surf City's management didn't want a saxophone in the group, even though the previous band, Johnny Campbell and The Detours, had featured a saxophone.

Murray thus went to Shirley Lodge and played in The Laurie Searle Trio until his appointment as assistant manager at The United Service Hotel in September 1967, with instructions to find a band for The Plaza Lounge, ready for an impending 10.00pm closing time for hotels.  This resulted in a permanent gig for The Village Gate every Friday night and Murray enjoyed playing saxophone spots with that group.
