From garage to party to pub to Ballroom, All Fall Down played 80 live gigs in 4 years. Starting off as 3-chord post-punk Christchurch school kids, the band crafted ever more complex songs, filled with '60s inspired melodies, culminating in the 1987 release of their 6 track "hook-laden jangly pop" Flying Nun EP (Flying Nun 089), My Brand New Wallpaper Coat. In July 1987, in the middle of recording that original EP, the band played the Teachers' College Mid-Winter Ball and with great foresight Rob Mayes recorded the gig. Live mix and sound desk to cassette recording was by Rob Mayes at the Teachers' College Dunedin vs Christchurch Sports Tournament Formal Ball in the Student Union Ballroom of The University of Canterbury, Tuesday 7th July, 1987. The discipline of the recording made the band tighter than ever, and the excited student teachers danced in all corners of the Ballroom. All Fall Down only played live a dozen more times, but they had more songs to record. |
