Alister Parker

Alister Parker  —  a founding member of Christchurch band The Gordons (1980), and with Hamish Kilgour also formed Bailterspace in (1987).  Bailterspace, eventually reunited the original Gordons lineup within its ranks.

Alister is a prominent New Zealand singer, songwriter, and guitarist best known for anchoring the Christchurch post-punk, noise rock, and shoegaze scenes.  He is primarily celebrated as a founding member and driving force behind two of the country's most influential underground bands: The Gordons and Bailterspace (originally Nelsh Bailterspace).  The Gordons (1980–1981) formed in Christchurch with Alister Parker alongside art student John Halvorsen and Brent McLachlan, the trio became legendary for their colossal, wall-of-sound guitar noise and they were widely rumoured to be a major early influence for iconic American alternative rock band Sonic Youth.  Parker jammed with The Clean drummer Hamish Kilgour in central Christchurch thus starting Nelsh Bailter Space which made its live debut in January 1987 supporting The Chills at the Carlton Hotel in central Christchurch.

By the early 1990s, Parker had relocated to New York City with the band, and this became his long-term adopted home whilst he still occasionally returned to New Zealand for selective festivals and music projects.  Bailterspace are one of the longest serving bands for New Zealand independent record company Flying Nun Records.
