The Christchurch Folk Centre was a folk music venue in Christchurch, New Zealand, that opened in October 1967. It was founded by Phil Garland, a local singer who specialized in New Zealand folk songs, and the venue was The Copper Cat in High Street. The venue was originally open on Saturday and Sunday nights, but was later extended to include Friday nights. It featured local artists such as Stoney Lonesome and Jae Renaut, as well as visiting artists like Mike Seeger, Alice Seeger, and Dave Swarbrick. The Band of Hope Jug Band recorded their self-titled album at the venue in 1967.
The Christchurch Folk Centre was later renamed The Christchurch Folk Club (which was formed in 1968 and continues to be a successful club hosting a variety of music). |
